Upright

A blindfolded woman with bound arms stands surrounded by eight swords driven into the ground around her — the Eight of Swords upright is the sensation of being trapped, with no way out, even though the prison is largely built by the mind itself. Notice that the swords don't form a closed wall: there are gaps between them, a passage through which she could walk if she could only see. The blindfold and the bindings are the true obstacles, not the swords themselves — the fear, the self-criticism, the repetitive thoughts that convince someone there's no choice when, in truth, there still is. This card appears when negative thinking has grown so loud it's started to sound like absolute truth, and the first step to escape is simply recognizing that the prison, this time, has a door.

Reversed

Reversed, the Eight of Swords is the beginning of movement toward freedom — the blindfold starting to loosen, the courage to question your own limiting beliefs taking shape. It doesn't mean freedom has fully arrived yet, but that the process of breaking free from a thought pattern, or from a situation that was suffocating you, is already underway. (…)
