Upright

A figure lies upon a stone tomb, hands folded in prayer, three swords hanging on the wall above and a fourth tucked away below—the image recalls death, but the upright Four of Swords speaks to the opposite: rest, recovery, a necessary pause after a difficult stretch. It arrives right after the Three of Swords for a reason—after so much pain, body and mind demand silence, no more movement. The three swords on the wall remind you of what you've already weathered; the fourth, kept beneath, is the energy still left in reserve, waiting for the right moment to be called back into use. The invitation here is genuine: stop, even if stopping feels unproductive, because only in rest can the next phase truly begin with real strength.

Reversed

Reversed, the Four of Swords is the body crying out for a pause that the mind refuses to grant. It may signal being so busy, or so caught up avoiding your own thoughts, that true rest never arrives. (…)
