Upright

A man lies face-down, ten swords pierced through his back, beneath a dark sky—but on the horizon, a clear yellow dawn is already breaking through. The Ten of Swords upright is the end of a situation, a low point so absolute there's no denying that chapter has closed. It's the harshest image in the suit, and it doesn't ask to be softened: something truly hurt—a betrayal, a breakup, a loss that caught you off guard. But look at the man's hand, forming a gesture of blessing even in this final moment—the same gesture as the Hierophant—as if to say that, however brutal this parting was, it also clears space for something necessary to be born afterward. The bottom of the well, by definition, only has one direction: up.

Reversed

Reversed, the swords begin to fall from this man's back—the Ten of Swords reversed is recovery after the worst moment, the understanding, however painful, of why that ending had to happen. But it can also point the other way: resistance to accepting that something has ended, insisting on reviving a situation that's already given all it had to give. (…)
